The Quest:
As part of its overall strategy to continually develop its people this global business, like many others, wanted to embed a coaching culture so that managers and staff would experience less “Tell” in terms of managing people. The aim being to motivate and enable the growth of its people by offering a coaching skills programme that could be the pinnacle of its overall people development suite of courses. It needed to be highly interactive and experiential and give leaders and managers the skills to integrate coaching into their own culturally defined management style. The expectation was that employees would experience improved performance discussions, personal development more aligned to business needs and more effective career discussions. It was also expected that employee engagement scores would be affected positively by a more motivated workforce.
The Route:
A two day coaching skills programme was designed and rolled out to all leaders, managers and managers under training. It was designed so that it made clear links to the other programmes that participants had previously attended up to 6 months earlier and therefore provided a progressive development approach. Elements of coaching were broken down into manageable chunks to deepen learning and the course provided lots of practice and yet no role-plays. In other words real life only situations, challenges and goals were the topics coached and confidentiality was imperative.
The Outcomes:
Although this is an on-going programme there is now strong evidence that employee engagement has been impacted positively, employees are giving evidence that managers are doing less “Tell” and thereby allowing people to grow rather than just improve in the moment. Employee engagement scores have improved and employees are experiencing managers asking more questions. Further evidence shows that people are having more productive discussions around personal development and performance.
